Child Hoods @ Kichijoji, Japan

October 9th, 2005 - a bizarre collaboration between pioneering electro sound artists, Jonah Sharp of Space Time Continuum and Richard Sharpe of The Shamen, amazing Me-Sheen, Secret Animˇ Aficionados plus the noted academic and sci-fi critic Takayuki Tatsumi Ph.D with feminist sci fi author Mari Kotani and one of Japan's pre-eminent literary translators, Mamoru Masuda.

Not only but also, rising upbeat chillmasters Snoweffect, Firo and Australian producer psi-trance legend Ming D and partner Australian producer, The Wing Gang Project mixing visuals with VJ Shinji now in the top 20 of VJs around the planet.

Live from London (via Skype), critically acclaimed sci fi author, Richard Calder recited from his amazing first novel Dead Girls. Richard is commonly referred to by his peers as "the man who outGibsoned Gibson" and we're talking William here not Mel.

Offically this was the culminating gathering for the Kichijoji Animˇ Wonderland festival, but what brought all these artists together?

Billed as "a special live reunion show by SPACETIME "; Jonah Sharp created the concept of Spacetime Continuum, and was the founding member of San Francisco based Reflective Records, the groundbreaking label that exposed Matthew Herbert, Carl Craig, Mixmaster Morris, Plaid, Black Dog, Musiq and Pete Namlook. He released 4 major albums as Spacetime Continuum on the Astralwerks label, including the majestic concept album Sea Biscuit and Alien Dreamtime time featuring the late psychedelic guru Terence Mckenna. He has also been involved with re-mix and production work for many artists including Nine Inch Nails, Haruomi Hosono and most recently as producer for Mickey Hart, the original drummer of The Grateful Dead.

Jonah had recently discovered a box of long lost multi track tape recordings of the music he created with Richard Sharpe in the early 80s. Listening back to these sounds, he was impressed by its freshness and suggested to Richard Sharpe, his old art school chum, that they re-unite to make a live show based on their history.

Since his days as a key board player in The Shamen, Richard has risen to world wide prominence as a freaky fetishistic fashion designer. Now based in Tokyo, it's hard to miss his creations being worn around Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya and of course Kichijoji.

Takayuki Tatsumi, a university Professor recited from Dead Girls in Japanese. Mari Kotani, international sci-fi author and feminist whose new book Techno-Gothic has just been released by Shueisha Publishers joined the Professor on stage (by the way she is his wife) with Mamoru Masuda, the translator of Richard Calder's trilogy. (Not to mention works by J G Ballard and other eminent literary figures).

Well over a decade ago when Professor Tatsumi introduced Cyber-punk to Japan, Richard Calder was right on top of his hit list and his fascinating tracts inspired leading Japanese graphic artists and film makers like Hajime Sorayama and Mamoru Ishii.

Snoweffect, under the gentle guidance of KenIchiro Hoshi, founding member and producer of the Ryoondo Tea label, are at the vanguard of intelligent ambient pop. They have performed live planet wide from New York City to Bangkok and at last spring's already legendary Sakura Chillout at the Daikakukji Temple in Kyoto an event produced by KenIchiro Hoshi who is also producer of Kichijoji Animˇ Wonderland. Firo is a leading individual artist in the Ryoondo stable.

Snoweffect connection understood, but how did Ming D and The Wing Gang Project get into the picture?

Ming D has been at the forefront of progressive psi-trance in Australia and DJed all over Asia. As well as that he's the key perpetrator of australiens.net - evolving Bible of all things Australian out bush electronic dance events (commonly referred to as "doofs") which he also produces. Not content to DJ and produce events, Ming D is fast rising to become one of Australia's hottest new film makers.

The Wing Gang Project, is the moniker of Ming's production partner Jimmie Wing and whoever happens to aid and abet him. Wing has produced events in Taiwan, Indonesia, and Thailand and VJed in all those places plus India and Australia. Jimmie was the organiser and person responsible for Child Hoods.

Secret Animˇ Aficionados? A very weird mix indeed. Perhaps the event presenters Flying Pixels and 4¼¨ are the key to unravelling the conundrum of this odd collaboration. 4¼¨ are the animˇ production house largely responsible for producing Animatrix but who or what are Flying Pixels?

Floating into the future, we became at Child Hoods and discovered.

Some Whales Go North Via Sydney

A large pod of whales passed the heads of Sydney harbour on the Queen's Birthday Holiday. They were heading North to mate, probably eager to get there so they didn't put on much of a performance. Some playful dolphins joined them for a while showing them how easy it is to do a full breech with their tails completely out of the water but the whales just wanted to get North to where all the action is. And who could blame them? Why put on a show for mere humans when you're on your way to a hot date? Special thanks to Sydney muralist Paul Fullbrook for arranging the trip with the Whale people and to Icon Images http://www.iconimages.com.au for sponsoring film and equipment.
